Description

G. (GERALD HARVEY JONES) HARVEY (American, b. 1933)
Weathered Oak, 1968
Oil on canvas
36 x 30 inches (91.4 x 76.2 cm)
Signed and dated lower left: G. Harvey 1968

One of the most popular and successful artists of the American West, G. Harvey is primarily known for his scenes of cowboys at work, and for his moody depictions of major cities at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century. However, earlier in his career, he frequently painted the landscape of the Texas Hill Country. These landscapes, which are firmly in the tradition of Julian Onderdonk, Porfirio Salinas, and Robert Wood, show a great talent for capturing the light, colors, and contours of his native surroundings. While today, he may be more widely known for scenes of cattle drives and cowboys riding down rain glistened streets, these landscapes show that he was equally adept at depicting nature in its glory.
