G. (Gerald Harvey Jones) Harvey (American, 1933-2017)

Who was Harvey G? (Gerald Harvey Jones)

A true blue American landscape artist, many of G Harvey’s paintings evoke the American masters of the previous century. He was heavily influenced by the great Edouard Cortes, and as such his paintings often evoke the nostalgia of a bygone era. Born and raised in his beloved Texas, G Harvey never strayed far from that which inspired him -- his oil on canvas paintings and bronzes both reflect that state’s romantic landscapes and peoples.

That’s not to say that Harvey didn’t experience success outside of the American Southwest -- he did. His work has been exhibited in some of the most famed galleries in the world including The Smithsonian and The Grand National Exhibition in 1965 (where he won the New Master’s Award). Harvey died in 2017, leaving a legacy of achingly beautiful landscape paintings, evocative bronzes, and above all else, lasting love for his native Texas. It’s obvious when viewing a Harvey that it is the work of a true American original.

What type of art does G Harvey create?

  1. Harvey (Gerald Harvey Jones) was an American landscape painter and sculptor whose work focused almost solely on the American West and the Western expansion of the late 19th century. His oil paintings lend themselves to an earlier generation of post-impressionists, rain-soaked cobblestone, and fluffy white clouds evoke nostalgic feelings of a simpler time.

How often do G Harvey paintings come up for auction?

G Harvey is a celebrated American painter, but many of his paintings are in private collections and as such do not come up for auction very often. In 2019, there were only 22 known G Harvey paintings for sale (and none at upcoming auctions). There has been some recent movement (post-2014) on Harvey's works. Harvey died in 2017, so it could be that his pieces become more available in the coming years.

How much is a G Harvey painting or sculpture worth?

Some of G Harvey’s best-known paintings have sold in the hundreds of thousands of dollars ($150,000 - $500,000+) while his sculptures have sold for significantly less (usually in the four or five figures). While some of those sculptures have sold for less than their high estimate, a Harvey painting will almost always outperform even optimistic estimates, making them a good investment for the collector.

Which G Harvey painting is the most valuable?

G Harvey’s most valuable painting is When Cowboys Don’t Change (1993) which sold for $516,500 at auction in 2018. It features Harvey’s trademark oil on canvas look, with a number of ranchers riding across an oil field at dusk. Sold by Heritage Auction House, its soft brushstrokes and striking use of light give the painting a traditional Harvey-esque nostalgia.

What are the most famous paintings by G Harvey?

The most famous painting by G Harvey is definitively When Cowboys Don’t Change (1993). This isn’t to say that there aren’t many other works that feature prominent Harvey themes throughout the years. History in the Making (unknown), Land of the Yosemite (1980), and New York, New York (unknown) have all commanded high auction prices for these very reasons.
