In the late 1980s Val Bertoia was asked to repair a rod on Harry Bertoia's 18-foot fountain sculpture in Richmond, Virginia. When he viewed it from above, he noticed that his father had cleverly arranged the complex grid into a dollar sign design. Inspired by his father's masterpiece, Val configured this 50-rod sounding sculpture into a similar dollar sign design using topped and topless rods.
