Attributed to Felix Moissenet (American, b. ca. 1814)
Canal Street, New Orleans
, circa 1857-59
Mammoth-plate Ambrotype
8-1/4 x 10 inches (21.0 x 25.4 cm), framed
On the back of the frame is a photocopy of a letter dated 1975 from photo-historian Eugenia P. Janis to photography collector Arnold Crane referring to the research done on the Ambrotype by architectural historian Arthur Krim. His research concluded that this Ambrotype can be dated from between 1857 and 1859 by the gap between the buildings connected by a colonnade on the right side of the image. On that site stood the former home of Judah Touro (1775-1854). The home was converted in 1846 from the Church Rectory of the second Christ Church, later Touro Synagogue, which stood to the left. The Touro home was demolished in 1857. On either side of the gap are two Touro-owned buildings that were joined together by 1859 to form one large Touro Building. Further down Canal Street can be seen the D.D. Holmes block (1849) and the third Christ Church (1846). The columned building to the left of the church is Union Terrace by James Dakin, 1836.
Judah Touro was a New Orleans businessman with interests in shipping, trade and real estate. His legacy though is as a philanthropist. He built a synagogue, almshouse and an infirmary which became the largest free hospital in Louisiana. He give to Jewish, Catholic and Protestant charities as well as being co-builder of the Bunker Hill Monument and founder of the first free public library in America.
Felix Moissenet operated a gallery at 1 Camp Street on the corner of Canal Street from 1851 to 1858.
The term Mammoth plate is used for anything larger than whole (or full) plate which is 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Some collectors feel that the term Mammoth should only refer to plates 10 x 12 inches or larger.
