LITERATURE
Lamarche-Vadel, Helmut Newton, Editions du Regard, 1981, p. 31;
Vogue, Paris, November 1981, p. 169;
Lagerfeld, Helmut Newton 47 Nudes, Thames and Hudson, 1982, p. 31, (another example illustrated, all of the above) .

In this image Henriette Allais models at Newton's home near Saint Tropez at Ramatuelle. Henriette is best known as the subject of Newton's iconic image 'Big Nude III'. Newton was largely influenced by Surrealism, particularly the work of artists Man Ray, Paul Delvaux, and Hans Bellmer; the influence of which can been seen when we examine Man Ray's sculpture, 'Vénus Restaurée'. Newton's intentional employment of the natural afternoon sunlight in Saint Tropez dramatically highlights the contours of the female form in much the same way that the binding string does. Known for his provocative imagery, Newton's 'Tied-Up Torso' perfectly summarizes the confrontational nature and surrealist undertones of his collective body of work.
