Birth Place: Queens, NY
Biography:
"Alfred Gescheidt was born in Queens, New York in 1926. He won a scholarship to the Art Student's League and studied with Will Barnet and Harry Sternberg. After a brief stint in the Navy during WWII, he went to the University of New Mexico and studied with Raymond Johnson. It was during this time that he decided to become a photographer and transferred to the Los Angeles Art Center School where he studied with George Hoyningen-Huene. Gescheidt has had a distinguished career as an artist and photographer. His photomontages made him famous and he has been described as "the Charlie Chaplin of the camera" and "America's foremost photo-satirist." With an eye for the sublime and the humor that happens in everyday life, he captured many engaging images that are not photomontages. Starting in the 1950's he began photographing, documenting, life's little details on the streets and beaches of America. His work has been published in more than twenty-four magazines and newspapers over the last fifty years. His work first appeared in Life magazine in 1951 and in August 1970 Life gave him a two-page spread. He spent three years working with OUI Magazine in a space entitled "Gescheidt's World." He also produced over 150 record album covers and 100 pocket book covers." The Old Print Shop
