Greg Gorman is a nationally renowned portrait photographer whose commercial and artistic work has found critical success and a substantial audience for close to five decades. He has shot some of the most well-beloved movie posters of our generation, including Tootsie and Pirates of the Caribbean. He has worked for most of the glossy magazines of the 20th century, perhaps most famously for Life Magazine, where he shot several covers.
Gorman is known for the candid, intimate approach he takes to his celebrity portraits. Everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Jude Law is shot with a compassionate, empathetic quality that evokes a stark beauty. This is only enhanced by Gorman’s choice of materials, his signature Honeywell Pentax 35mm camera, almost always with black and white film. His photos have been exhibited at some of the most prestigious galleries in the world, including the Helmut Newton Museum in Berlin.

Greg Gorman was born in Kansas City, Missouri. During a visit to a Jimi Hendrix concert, the blossoming artist took photos of the legendary guitar player. This was just the momentum that Gorman needed, immediately after he enrolled in photography classes at the University of Kansas. He continued his studies in the 1970s, graduating with an MFA in cinematography from USC in 1972.
