Also known as: Dulac, Edmond
Biography:Born in Toulouse, France in 1882, Edmond Dulac, began creating his first works using water colors. After moving to England, in an attempt to pursue a law career, Dulac soon realized it was not for him, and began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts. He began to illustrate for several different publishers of the time, including art work for many now-famous books including Arabian Nights, Stories From Hans Christian Andersen, Sleeping Beauty, and The Tempest.
In WWI Dulac made contributions to relief effort books and has work included in Princess Mary's Gift Book, and King Albert's Book. In 1916 Dulac had several of his own books published completely filled with his work only. These were Edmund Dulac's Fairy Book, Edmund Dulac's Picture Book for the French Red Cross, and Tanglewood Tales.
Unfortunately when WWI ended Dulac's illustrations were no longer in demand, so he had to begin working in other areas with his art. Dulac worked for a weekly newspaper, The Outlook. He painted portraits, helped to design British stamps and design bank notes, designed the backs of playing cards, bookplates, and even theater sets and costumes. In 1924 Dulac illustrated for The American Weekly, a Sunday newspaper. One of Dulac's last jobs was for John Milton's Comus. He later died in 1953 at the age of 70.
