Description
MODERN CRINOIDLamprometra sp.
Indo-Pacific Ocean
A living fossil; this modern crinoid is a member of a class of animal that has been on earth for over 450 million years and survived multiple mass extinctions. Crinoids are rare but can be found in many marine environments: from the great dark depths of the oceans to shallow tropical seas. The present specimen is from a genus that lives in tropical reefs; they are free floating and can move and attach themselves to different coral masses, hiding during the day, and filter feeding at night with open arms. Crinoids are difficult to preserve because they disintegrate within hours after death; this crinoid has been professionally preserved and mounted in a glass frame ready for hanging. The crinoid, possessing natural green and white color patterns, has an arm span of up to 6 ½ inches and is mounted in a wood and glass frame measuring 16 x 19 inches.
