Description

    STELLER'S SEA COW RIB SLICE
    Hydrodamalis gigas
    St. Lawrence Island, Alaska

In 1741, Europeans exploring the Arctic Circle came upon giant manatee-like animals which they named Steller's Sea Cows. Floating on the sea surface and consuming a diet of kelp, the Steller's Sea Cow grew up to 26 feet long and weighed upwards of 20 tons. Unfortunately, the Steller's Sea Cow was too delicious to survive very long past its discovery and was promptly eaten to extinction within 27 years. The Steller's Sea Cow had extremely dense bone to help counteract its buoyancy and this slice of Steller's Sea Cow rib from the long abandoned whaling stations on St. Lawrence Island shows off that density. This rib slice is polished on one face and features a tan core with a light green patina and measures 2 ¼ x 1 ¾ inches.
