The present work is a study for Walt Kuhn's monumental late circus portrait, Dragoon (1947), which is in the permanent collection of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas. A comparison of this study with the finished oil on canvas shows a number of changes Kuhn made to the composition-notably elongating the plume of the helmet and the woman's neck, prettifying her face, and narrowing the proportions of the support to emphasize the figure's height. This study, made from life, possesses a more haunting sense of personality in the heavily shaded eyes and fleshier mouth that seems to be forming a word rather than simply smiling.

Condition Report*: There appears to be light overall paper discoloration where pigment is not present; minor surface dirt; slight undulation of paper only visible in raking light in figure's hat and chest; handling creases visible at center right and left edges; framed under glass.
    Framed Dimensions 31.75 X 26.5 Inches
