    Viktor Schreckengost (American, 1906-2008)
Ceiling Light, Sophomore Design, Cleveland School of Art, 1926
    Watercolor and ink on board
    14 x 20 inches (35.6 x 50.8 cm) (sight)
Titled, inscribed with instructor's name, and signed lower right: Mr. Mihalik / Victor S. Schrecengost

Victor S. Schrecengost, as he originally spelled his name, attended the Cleveland School of Art (now Institute of Art) from 1925-9, with a major in Design under Julius Mihalik, a ceramist who had taught at Budapest and Vienna, and a minor in Ceramics under R. Guy Cowan and Arthur Baggs. He was an exceptional student across the board, as these rare works of his juvenilia will readily attest. Shortly before his graduation in 1929, he saw an exhibition of modern Viennese ceramics at the Cleveland Museum of Art, including works by noted ceramic sculptor Michael Powolny from the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule which completely excited him. He spoke to Julius Mihalik about it, and Mihalik encouraged him to go study in Vienna with Powolny. There, he not only absorbed the ideas of Powolny but received important critiques from celebrated architect Josef Hoffmann. In Europe, Viktor changed the spelling of his name to the European "Viktor Schreckengost," not wanting to lose momentum after receiving favorable press for his work under that name. Upon his return to the States, he took a duel-job teaching at the Cleveland School of Art and working at Cowan Pottery.
