Rodolfo Morales of Oaxaca, Mexico is well known for his vibrant convergence of Surrealism and magic realism across a variety of media. Inspired by his surroundings, Morales created transportive, dreamlike worlds that depict women, elaborate churches, and the bustling life around him. In his work Se Avecina la Tormenta (Storm Is Coming), Morales conveys in pencil on paper a phrase often used to describe looming changes or approaching troubles. In the work, a statuesque female figure lies flat beneath the clouds of falling rain. The environment appears dreamlike; a seemingly sleeping figure lies beneath the gaze of a disembodied larger female head, which acts as a barrier between her and another figure curled up against the head. The figures appear unknowing of what kind of storm approaches, with calm, relaxed faces beneath swirling clouds above. They are rendered atop sharply angled architecture, with only one doorway not covered by bars. As a boy, upon visiting the city of Oaxaca for the first time Morales became enamored with the cobble streets, the symmetry found in architecture, and the changing landscape around him - a vision that would continue to shape his art throughout his career.
