LITERATURE:
New Hollstein, 119.
This large early print by Rembrandt is, unlike most of his etchings, based upon a painting: it records in reverse the composition he painted for Frederick Hendrik, the Prince of Orange, who, as stadholder was the highest-ranking elected official in the Netherlands. When he undertook this ambitious print, Rembrandt was relatively inexperienced with printmaking on such a large scale, and therefore enlisted the help of engraver Jan van Vliet. This collaboration can be seen in Rembrandt's spontaneous line and van Vliet's heavier marks, particularly noticeable in the facial expressions. This is a good, evenly-printed late 19th- or early 20th-century impression.
This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Galerie Michael.
