Description

OTIS DOZIER (American, 1904-1987)
Desert Hills, 1945
Oil on paper
11-1/2 x 16 inches (29.2 x 40.6 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: Otis Dozier '45

Dozier and Jerry Bywaters traveled to Marfa and Terlingua, Texas, in 1937 to sketch and paint. The following year he won a scholarship to study with Boardman Robinson at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and in 1939 became Robinson's assistant, a position he held until 1945. Robinson encouraged Dozier to use a more fluid style, which Dozier applied during his trips into the mountains to sketch and paint. Desert Hills may have resulted from Dozier's sketches in southwest Texas or from those made in southern Colorado or northeastern New Mexico, as all are arid regions. However, the aqueous feel of Desert Hills seems to lean toward his time in Colorado, a transitional period between Dozier's hard-line Regionalism of the 1930s and the abstraction of the 1950s and 1960s.
