    PROVENANCE:
    Marlborough Gallery, New York.

    NOTE:
We wish to thank David Joel, Executive Director of the Larry Rivers Foundation, for his invaluable cataloguing assistance. According to Mr. Joel, "There is a possibility that Clarice with a Blue Eye: The Artist's Wife may have been done in Europe, perhaps France. Larry and Clarice moved to France in '61 and got married in London. It's interesting because around this time Larry started doing his Vocabulary paintings. One of the first, if not the first Vocabulary painting was a portrait of Clarice with parts of the face defined in French. Parts of the Face: French Vocabulary Lesson was done in 1961 (the same year as the present lot) and was acquired in '61 or '62 by the Tate in England.

"Clarice with a Blue Eye: The Artist's Wife may have been a precursor to or a study for Parts of the Face: French Vocabulary Lesson. In the collage, Rivers' focus on the face and some of the features he chooses to block out or emphasize appear as though he may have been working through decisions for inclusion/exclusion in the portrait painting. Also the collage aspect is another precursor to introducing that other element of a vocabulary lesson onto a painting or drawing."
