    Description

Kiowa Ledger Drawing by Etahdleuh Doanmoe
    c. 1878

mixed media, titled at the bottom with pencil in the artist's hand: The Kiowa Camp in Indian Territory

    Provenance:
Acquired by Alicia "Alice" Key Pendleton, daughter of Frances Scott Key, niece of Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, and wife of George Hunt Pendleton, and their daughter Jane, during winter vacations at Saint Augustine, Florida, 1875-78.

    Dimensions: 16 ½ x 12 ½ inches; 18 x 14 ½ inches framed

Twenty-four tipis and two, canvas wall tents are shown, pitched under the shade of cottonwood trees. Doubtless, a stream flows nearby, across the low ground beyond the camp. The central grouping, showing a feast under a shade arbor of erected poles with a "roof" of blankets, may be compared to the similar composition by Etahdleuh in 1877, "A Kiowa Banquet in the good old days back home" (Beinecke Library, Yale University, Cat. No. WA MSS S-1174, P. 24):
    See image here.

The center, red blanket temporarily repurposed as part of the "roof," is decorated with a wide strip of beadwork. Other groupings, with guests seated under similar blanket-arbors, are seen elsewhere in the camp, at left and right. A large, iron kettle heating over a campfire tended by cooks, with serving bowls stacked nearby, is adjacent to each feast scene. In the left foreground, a man's war shield is exposed on a tripod of poles, lying against the tanned animal skin used to wrap it at night. Exposing a shield to the sun during the day, to become empowered by its rays, was a common protocol. Another displayed shield may be seen across the camp, to the right of center. Two, well-dressed young men, doubtless seeking female companionship, are strolling above and to the left of the foreground shield. Two young boys and their dog frolic at far right. Note that each boy is trailing a lariat, indicating they are headed for their families' horses among those running loose, grazing on the distant hills. A particularly-valuable horse, well-trained as a buffalo-runner, or a man's war horse, is picketed in the center foreground, where any lurking enemies would be unable to reach it.
