PROVENANCE:

NOTE:
"I was with Ted when he acquired these three drawings by Sedrick Huckaby," recalls Marianne Berardi of Heritage Auctions.

"We were visiting a Dallas collector who lived near Valley House Gallery, when I off-handedly mentioned having seen a fabulous drawing by a young Fort Worth artist named Sedrick Huckaby recently at a friend's house in Akron, Ohio. I thought it'd be worth a visit to his dealer, Valley House Gallery, to see more of his work. Ted said he didn't know Sedrick's work but was intrigued, and up for going over to take a look. Once Cheryl and Kevin Vogel brought out the few drawings they had in stock--they had recently had a show of Sedrick's work so there wasn't a lot at hand--Ted's eyes lit up. "Man, can this guy draw!" Ted said and bought them all. Soon afterwards he began collecting Sedrick's work avidly--drawings and paintings both. One of his last major purchases was an enormous painting of the face of Sedrick's grandmother, measuring some ten feet tall. She was dying, and Sedrick unflinchingly recorded her face, deeply beloved to him despite the ravages that time and illness etched all over it. Ted was blown away by the bravery of that painting which the artist called simply "As I Am."

Born in Fort Worth, Sedrick Huckaby studied painting with noted painter and teacher, Ron Tomlinson, before earning his BFA at Boston University and his MFA at Yale.
