FRANK REAUGH (American, 1860-1945)

These five glowing pastels are being offered separately; however, they have been identically framed.

The first two are pure cloud studies. Rich blue sky blends downward into silvery clouds with just a hint of the darker atmosphere, suggesting the horizon below. Another blue and silvery cloud study contains the narrowest of horizons. The next pastel depicts a narrow horizon and hazy pink-lit sand dunes in the far distance. Finally, the last one of these pictures is an exquisite horizon study of a sunset. The orange and yellow sunlight fades upward into the grey blue sky of dusk and down into the grey of the atmosphere above the dark horizon line. It cannot help but put one in mind of the transcendent light and colors of Mark Rothko's paintings.
