    Frank Reaugh (American, 1860-1945)
    Sharp Peak
    Pastel on paper
    3-1/2 x 6-3/4 inches (8.9 x 17.1 cm) (sight)
Frank Reaugh was an artist who devoted his considerable artistic skills to impressionistic depictions of West Texas. He has been called the "Dean of Texas Artists" because in the 1890s, the first of many art students began accompanying him on his frequent West Texas sketching trips. Most of Reaugh's pastels are small in size, and therefore, well adapted to transport and use in open country. This allowed him to travel the vast expanses of the state easily and to work in the outdoors with relatively little fuss. His pastel landscapes are considered some of the most poetic depictions of Texas ever produced.

Three of the Frank Reaugh pastels in the current sale exhibit this pastellist's mastery of a dry medium in depicting the aridity of West Texas and the Southwest and its effects on the land and the air. Sharp Peak and Untitled [Arid Landscape with Birds] are the results of waterlessness on gypsum and salt-laden riverbeds. The dry air also influences perspective and depth perception leading to what some American artists have called "the faraway nearby." Sharp Peak likely depicts one of the mountain ranges in far southwest Texas, while the other one could represent anywhere in West Texas or eastern New Mexico.

With its brown-tinged palette and the handling of the pastel, laid over a grey underpainting, Nov. 2, is clearly a painting completed between 1885 and 1890. More than likely this painting depicts the landscape in Clay or Montague County, Texas.
