Description
Frank Reaugh (American, 1860-1945)Longhorns West Texas
Pastel on paper
3 x 6-1/2 inches (7.6 x 16.5 cm) (sight)
Property from the Estate of Olin Travis and Josephine Oliver
PROVENANCE:
David Dike Fine Art, Dallas, November 9, 1996, lot 116;
Private collection.
He has been called the "Dean of Texas Artists" because in the 1890s, the first of many art students began accompanying him on his frequent West Texas sketching trips. One of his favorite and most talented students was Josephine Oliver Travis. While she produced works in other mediums, like the oil painting of artist Harry Carnohan (71017) and crayon drawing of Frank Reaugh (71018) himself, she produced many small pastels (71012-71016), which were heavily influenced by her teacher. It is not surprising Josephine and Olin would have two excellent examples of his work in their collection, like Three Longhorns and Longhorns West Texas.
