PROPERTY FROM THE ROBERT C. AND FALLON B. VAUGHN COLLECTION

Reaugh's 1888 pencil drawing, Cotton Gin, Lawrence, is one of hundreds of sketches he created near the family farm near Lawrence, Texas. Lawrence was a whistle stop in Kauffman County when the Reaughs moved to its vicinity in 1876. Although they had moved to Terrell by 1888, Reaugh continued to add to his image library with sketches and studies of the surroundings in his adopted home county. Cotton Gin, Lawrence shows his immense skill in the drawing media; while the subject should be considered with the better-known depictions of cotton gins fifty years later by Dallas Regionalists Jerry Bywaters, Florence McClung, and Merritt Mauzey. This drawing-and others like it from 1880s and 1890s Texas--in particular solidify Reaugh as the true father of "Lone Star Regionalism."
