Description

Frank Reaugh (American, 1860-1945)
Blue Mountain
Pastel on paper
4 x 8 inches (10.2 x 20.3 cm)

PROPERTY FROM THE ROBERT C. AND FALLON B. VAUGHN COLLECTION

In Blue Mountain Reaugh exhibits his mastery of the West Texas and Southwestern landscape that he came to capture better than anyone, before or since. He wrote in his 1936 Biographical "I like to be where the skies are unstained by dust and smoke, where the trees are untrimmed and where the wild flowers grow. I like the brilliant sunlight, and the far distance. I like the opalescent color of the plains. It is the beauty of the great Southwest as God has made it that I love to paint." In Blue Mountain Reaugh coalesced all these factors-sky, plains, trees, wildflowers, color-into a little gem that belies its small size by projecting a scale seen only in the American West.
