According to Michael R. Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, and Frank Reaugh expert:

I have examined carefully the scans you sent me of pastel of the lone mesquite. Based on the subject and palette, I believe the pastel is a good example of Mr. Reaugh's work from about 1885 to 1890. Throughout his career, Mr. Reaugh continued to create and amass sketches of different aspects of the Southwestern landscapes, particularly of trees and groups of trees. For Mr. Reaugh his field sketches served as a visual vocabulary to which he would constantly refer upon his return to his Oak Cliff studio. It is highly likely this particular sketch found its way into a larger Reaugh pastel or oil. Furthermore, these field sketches, such as this one of the lone mesquite, are able to stand along as works of art in their own right.
