According to Michael R. Grauer, Associate Director for Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art at the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum, and Frank Reaugh expert:

I have examined carefully the scans you sent me of pastel "May." Based on the subject and palette, I believe the pastel is a good example of Mr. Reaugh's work from about 1885 to 1895. I would also suggest "May" may have been painted in Clay County, Texas, as we have at least two pastels in our collection using this same strong green, one of which is inscribed "Clay County."

Throughout his career, Mr. Reaugh continued to create and amass sketches of different aspects of the Southwestern landscapes, particularly of trees and groups of trees often near water. This painting may depict a playa or a stock pond. The birds in the foreground are also a common Reaugh device. Furthermore, Mr. Reaugh often painted vignettes of the Southwestern landscape, such as we see in "May." For Mr. Reaugh his field sketches served as a visual vocabulary to which he would constantly refer back in his Oak Cliff studio. It is highly likely this particular sketch found its way into a larger Reaugh pastel or oil. Furthermore, these field sketches, such as "May," are able to stand alone as fine works of art in their own right.
