    FRANK REAUGH (1860-1945)
Lake Cliff Park Colorado & Zang Dallas, TX
    Pastel on grit paper
    3-1/4 x 7 inches (8.3 x 17.8 cm)
    Signed and titled verso

It had water rides, a carousel, and music shows. There was a Ferris wheel, stadium, bath house, natatorium, rides galore, and a 30-acre lake. Welcome to beautiful Lake Cliff Park, "the Southwest's greatest playground," or at least it was on opening day on July 4, 1906. Thousands arrived by horse-drawn buggy, on the new five-cent electric streetcar, or even in one of those newfangled motorcars. Drawn in by $100,000 worth of amusements and attractions never seen before in this part of the country, the visitors passed through an arched entryway with a six-foot eagle flanked by large American flags.

Money problems plagued the park and in 1913 it was sold to the City of Dallas for $55,000. Over the years the rides and attractions were dismantled. The last attraction, the pool, was closed in 1959. In 1994, the Lake Cliff Historic District was established and in recent years there has been a renaissance in the area.

Acquired by descent from the artist by the present owner (the present owner's parents worked for Frank Reaugh at El Sibil, his home in Oak Cliff)
