PROVENANCE:
Christie's, New York, January 24, 2006, lot 131;
Acquired by the present owner from the above.
This sketch of legendary dancer Isadora Duncan was created as a study for a frieze in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris. A daring group of artists turned the theater into a masterpiece of collaborative design: lights developed by René Lalique, architecture by Van de Velde and the Perret Brothers, and extensive decoration by painters Maurice Denis and Edouard Vuillard. Bourdelle's work enjoyed particular prominence: the sculptor carved Duncan and others in bas-relief on the building's very façade.
