The original pastel from which this counterproof was taken is listed and reproduced in the catalogue of the Degas Atelier Sale, No. III, 74, and in Lemoisne, no. 1180. The provenance of this counterproof is of special interest. Ernest Rouart was the son of Henri Rouart, an intimate friend of Degas and one of the great "amateurs" of his time. Ernest actually studied art under Degas and, with his wife, Julie Manet, the daughter of painters Berthe Morisot and Edouard Manet, carried on the family tradition by acquiring their own magnificent collection of modern French art.
