    DAVID DAVIDOVICH BURLIUK (Russian/American, 1882-1967)
Still Life with Roses and Fruit, 1933
    Watercolor on illustration board
    13-1/4 x 9-3/4 inches (33.7 x 24.9 cm)
Signed and dated lower right: David Burliuk / 33

Wichita Art Museum; Wichita, Kansas; 1978.
Weatherspoon Art Gallery, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, "Art on Paper," 1979.

Burliuk was born in Russia and studied at the Art School Kasan in Odessa, as well as the Royal Academy in Munich and the Moscow School for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 1911 Burliuk exhibited with the famous Blue Rider group in Munich. Known also as a Neo-Primitivist, he is mainly associated with Russian Futurism and co-authored the Russian Futurist manifesto A Slap in the Face of Public Taste. Burliuk immigrated to the United States between the world wars and lived there until his death.

This fanciful still life pays homage to Matisse, with its cropped window through which a partial view of the sea is visible. A vase of flowers and a plate of citrus fruit sit on a table before the window. The realistic rendering of this painting is typical of Burliuk's later work.
