    Whales, 1954
    Watercolor on paper
    22 x 28 inches (55.9 x 71.1 cm)
    Signed and dated lower right: Bror Utter 2/54

    PROVENANCE:
    The artist;
    By descent to present owner, Judson Nail Petty.

    EXHIBITED:
    Old Jail Art Center, Albany, Texas, nd;
    Betty McLean Gallery, Dallas, Texas, nd.

    Bror Utter was a leading member of the Fort Worth Circle, a group of artists that included Bill Bomar, Veronica Helfensteller, and Dickson Reeder. In
    the 1930s and 1940s, these friends and collaborators grew together - developing styles influenced by Surrealism, Modernism, and Regionalism. In this
    auction we are offering Whale, 1954, Opening Cabinets, ca. 1950, and four vibrant abstract works from the 1980s. Utter's works on paper are highly
    sought after by collectors because of his reputation as a brilliant watercolorist.

    Whale, from Utter's popular series of fish and sea creatures, was originally owned by fellow Fort Worth Circle artist, Bill Bomar, and exhibited at the Old
    Jail Art Center in Albany, Texas. It comes to us through one of Bill Bomar's heirs and therefore, has never been offered before. It is special opportunity for
    collectors to own a large, exceptional Utter from an important collection that highlights the close relationships between the Fort Worth Circle. Opening
    Cabinets
    combines some of Utter's most archetypal subjects such as human figures, niches, cabinets, and vessels. Additionally, this work reflects Utter's
    signature style with his unusual, muted, and precariously balanced use of color in conjunction with his expert handling of the gouache. The distinctive
    palette, ambiguous space, and shifting perspectives found in Whale and Opening Cabinets create a dream-like quality that characterize Utter's in the late-
    1940s and 1950s, as it became increasingly surrealistic.
