Lust
Brown ink and blue wash on laid paper
11-3/4 x 7-1/4 inches (29.8 x 18.4 cm) (sheet)

Property from the William A. Glaser Collection

PROVENANCE:
Private collection, United Kingdom;
Sotheby's, London, December 13, 1973, lot 133 (as Attributed to the School of Harlem, Two studies of allegorical female figures, circa 1640, in a pair with Sloth);
Bernard Houthakker, Amsterdam, acquired from the above (as Attributed to Jacob de Gheyn III, Luxury);
Acquired by the present owner from the above, 1985.

Both the present and preceding lots are related to Hendrick Goltzius's 1591 series depicting the Seven Vices, or Seven Deadly Sins (E.K.J. Reznicek, "Drawings by Hendrick Goltzius, Thirty Years Later," Master Drawings, vol. XXXI, 1993, nos. K91, K95, figs. 18, 22, illustrated). The full series, including this figure, alternatively titled Lust, Luxury, or Extravagance, now resides in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; lost until 1972, the final version of the series was only known through the engravings done by Jacob Matham in 1593.

The related drawings presented here, striking in their use of blue wash and omission of the shadowy niche around the figures in the final versions, were certainly completed by an artist of considerable ability. Jacques de Gheyn III's father was employed in Goltzius's workshop for a period of around five years, and passed the master's manner on to his son.
