    WILLIAM TIMLIN (English/South African 1892-1943)
    Cinderella, book illustration
    Mixed-media on paper
    10.5 x 17.5 in.
    Signed lower right
William Timlin was educated in England but emigrated to South Africa before 1915 and studied art there. He exhibited frequently in South Africa, where he worked as an architect. A multi-talented, creative artist, Timlin wrote stories, composed music, illustrated magazines, conjured up watercolor fantasies, painted, and did some printmaking. His celebrated book, The Ship That Sailed to Mars, was published in 1923. For many fantasy art aficionados, the 48 superb color plates, alternated with 48 leaves of fine calligraphic and poetic text for the book, have placed Timlin among the "top ten" of fantasy illustrators. Timlin's work has been described by some as "a magical combination of science fiction and fairyland,"a visionary blend that has secured him a place alongside such giants of fantasy art as Arthur Rackham, W. Heath Robinson, Edmond Dulac, and Kay Nielsen.
