In One Good Turn Deserves Another, Leigh has chosen to reflect a quieter moment of life in the west. Instead of his canvases that capture frenetic moments of action, Leigh has here captured a rare moment of symbiotic generosity. This painting belies the mutual reliance that existed between man and horse for survival on the frontier. Without one, the other's existence is threatened. Leigh has framed the scene with the descending diagonals of the rocky landscape, which serve to focus our attention on the vignette in the foreground. The central element of the painting is water. The weary rider uses the only thing he has at hand, his hat, to scoop up water from the hidden pool for his parched horse. The fate of both rider and steed are intertwined.

    W. R. Leigh made his first trip west in 1897, illustrating a story for Scribner's magazine in Wyoming, and that trip would prove to be a turning point in his career. The artist found himself enamored with the culture of the west and the romance of its disappearing way of life. Although economic necessity would keep him from returning west again until 1906, Leigh continued work as an illustrator, honing his artistic skills as a draftsman and visual storyteller. When the opportunity came to work with the Santa Fe Railroad, Leigh jumped at the chance to exchange the expensive passage west for commissioned paintings of the epic American landscape. It is fitting that these paintings of Leigh's were used in the railroad's advertising campaign to entice easterners out west to the land which captured the artist's imagination.
