    WILLIAM RITSCHEL (American 1864-1949)
Thaw on 125th Street, New York
    Oil on canvas
    24in. x 20in.
    Signed lower left

William Ritschell is best known as a marine painter who depicted the California coast and ships at sea in a dramatic impressionist style. This painting is from an early date when Ritschell was living in New York and developing his style along with several of the ten Impressionist painters including Willard Metcalf and Childe Hassam. This work recalls the Harlem river scenes of Ernest Lawson in its depiction of a monochromatic winter scene presented in a myriad of shimmering colors.

    Provenance: Carlson Gallery, San Francisco

Exhibited: Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis MN

Literature: Ruth Lilly Westphal, Plein Air Painters of California: The North (Westphal Publishing, 1986), p. 168, illus.

Condition Report*: canvas has been wax lined, substantial areas of loose overpaint throughout lower central and right areas of canvas (appears to be cracklure repair), large area of sky upper left overpainted (again seems to be sloppy repair of cracklure), two small strips of detailed inpainting in upper right corner, small areas of inpainting in trees and above horizon center
