    Dorothy Miller, New York
Private Collection, California (gift from the above)

Dorothy Miller (1904 - 2003) was MoMA's first American art curator. She was one of the very few women in her time who held a museum position of such responsibility. On an international scale, Miller's most influential show was The New American Painting, which toured eight European countries in 1958 and 1959. This exhibition significantly changed European perceptions of American art, firmly establishing the importance of contemporary American painting, particularly the American Abstract expressionists, for an international audience. This show also included works by Willem de Kooning.
