    OSCAR EDWARD BERNINGHAUS (American, 1874-1952)
    Indian on Horseback
    Watercolor on paper
    9 x 7 inches (22.9 x 17.8 cm)
    Signed lower left: O.E. Berninghaus

Oscar Berninghaus was one of the founding members of the Taos Society of Artists. He first traveled to Northern New Mexico on a sketching trip for the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. His task was to provide images for use in the railroad's marketing and promotional material. Berninghaus was a native of St. Louis and had been trained at that city's School of Fine Arts, honing an innate talent for drawing. On his trip to New Mexico, he met Bert Phillips, another of the Society's founders who had already established a residency there. Phillips invited Berninghaus to return to the area to paint the native culture and scenery. Berninghaus split his time between Taos and St. Louis for many years before purchasing a ranch on the outskirts of town in 1919 and moving there permanently in 1925. For much of his early career, Phillips created vibrant watercolor sketches, which he used later in his studio to complete larger finished oils. These two small watercolors may have been done in preparation for larger oils. His pen and ink sketch of his ranch is a relatively rare scene of his New Mexico home.
