    OLEG STAVROWSKY (American, b. 1927)
    Winter Meet
    Oil on canvas
    46 x 36 inches (116.8 x 91.4 cm)
    Signed lower left: Oleg Stavrowsky
Titled and signed verso: "Winter Meet" / Oleg Stavrowsky

Although born in New York, Oleg Stavrowsky considers himself a "country hick." Growing up in Harlem, he first became interested in art while in high school. This pursuit was cut short when Stavrowsky was drafted into World War II. After working his way through a variety of jobs, he finally settled in to a career as an illustrator. Stavrowsky changed gears in the late 1960s after visiting the Hall of Fame (now the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum) where he became enamored with western art. From that point forward he began painting western themes and has enjoyed great success ever since.

"One big factor in my life is jazz. When I paint, I am listening to music. Sixty-four bars of good saxophone is like four square inches of good brush licks on a canvas. Western painting is my life, my income, my joy, my everything."
