"Bawling Deer - Taos Indian. One of the great hunters of Taos, a wonderful woodsman and trailer - catches trout with his bare hands and many other remarkable stunts of the experienced wood craftsman. Has been my model since a child, and now I am painting his son." - J.H. Sharp

Sharp penned this touching inscription on the verso of his canvas Daylight and Firelight (Bawling Deer) toward the end of his career. He writes admiringly of one of his favorite models whom he frequently painted during his years in Taos. Also known as Frank Martinez, Bawling Deer's image has become known among the ranks of such prolifically painted models as Crucita and Elk Foot. Bawling Deer began sitting for Sharp prior to 1910, and continues to appear in his paintings as late as 1946. Sharp speaks endearingly of his model, and reveals a moment of sentiment when he states that he now paints the son of the young boy that once modeled for him.

Here we see Bawling Deer sitting near a campfire and smoking a traditional pipe. With this later work of Sharp's, the focus has shifted from the portrait to the exploration of light. We see Bawling Deer's face illuminated by the warm red glow of the campfire, while the top of his head and back are lit by a different, cool-toned light source. The resulting mixture of light and shadows cast upon the figure provided Sharp a vehicle through which to solve a visual problem.
