    Description

    JIM WILCOX (American, b.1941)
    High Winds
    Oil on masonite
    24 x 36 inches (61.0 x 91.4 cm)
    Signed lower left: Jim Wilcox

For artistic inspiration, Jim Wilcox need only walk out of his studio in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and gaze at the magnificent scenery provided by the Grand Tetons. It is no wonder that the land around Jackson and nearby Yellowstone National Park are frequently the subjects of his paintings. He is fascinated with the constantly changing atmosphere of the mountains and strives to capture the nuances of colors, shadows, and light. Wilcox became a full time painter in 1969 and studied early on in his career with John Clymer and Conrad Schweiring.

He is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Prix de West purchase award from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City and the grand prize at the Arts for the Parks competition. He has won the Frederic Remington award for best oil painting twice at the Prix de West exhibition and sale in Oklahoma City. His work has been featured in many museums, including the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming; the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City; the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa; and the Autry National Center in Los Angeles.

Mount Moran After the Rain and High Winds, amply illustrate Wilcox's talent for portraying the beauty of the Tetons and the subtle ways in which light can quickly change the perception of colors, shapes, and mood. Wilcox attempts to capture exactly what he sees at any given time. His favorite manner of painting is en plein air, where he can quickly adjust his palette to changes in light and shadow. Both of these paintings capture a single, beautiful moment--a scene that can be painted hundreds of times with a different result every time.
