A past president of the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA), Jim Norton is a western artist known for his "getting dirty is essential" method of painting. The oldest of six children, Norton's father was a coal miner and moved his family frequently in order to find work. Because of this, Norton grew up in various coal mining towns throughout New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. As a teenager, he began working as a ranch hand in these western towns, and this experience provided the foundation for his artistic career. Norton's grandfather, Earl Fausett, was an artist and encouraged his grandson's painting and artistic education at Brigham Young University.

Norton does not just paint cowboy life, he has lived the life that he paints. As an insider, his accuracy and the detail of each canvas demonstrate his vast knowledge of cowboy culture. In Iceberg Lake, Norton has shown a lone cowboy leading his pack horses through a valley anchored by a glacial lake. The brilliant sunlight of the high elevation is rendered in stark contrasts of light and dark. Norton paints en plein air in order to capture the authenticity and vitality of his chosen subject matter, and his talent has been greatly awarded (CAA medals 1992, 1993, 1994, 1998, 2000, 2001; Artists' Choice Award 2000 and 2001; Best of Show 2001). Norton is also a member of the Northwest Rendezvous Group.
