Parisian-trained watercolorist Tristram Ellis enjoyed a successful career painting exotic landscapes in Cairo, Baghdad, Jerusalem, Venice, Athens, Constantinople, Corfu, and the icy terrain of Spitzbergen, the subject of the present work. Ellis's scenes of Spitzbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago in Norway, are among his most coveted works with their sophisticated blues describing the glacial shadows and the frigid sea. Characteristic of Ellis's compositions is his penchant for designing the scene as though it were viewed from the water rather than a land mass. Ellis painted the glaciers of Spitzbergen over a period of years. Related works from 1904 and 1908 have appeared at Bonham's, London in 2010 and Christie's, London in 2007, respectively.
