Ceremonial House Door
Carved doors appear in palaces of regional and village chiefs as well as shrines and cult houses. This particularly fine and deeply carved old door has a number of fascinating motifs of fish-legged figures, and associated watery imagery, that are often found on the doors to cult-houses, particularly those of the Ogboni society. These motifs are quite ancient and they have diffused into numerous contexts, so it is possible that the imagery may refer to a local chief's affiliation with a particular association.
