Standing Female Figure
Wood, white clay
Urhobo shrines dedicated to spirits and ancestors often have "families" of large male and female figures. A large male figure is the family head and smaller female figures are "wives." Out of context it is difficult to distinguish between spirits and ancestors. Spirits, "Edjo," are pervasive, with powers encompassing all of life, though a few may be physically located as town spirits. This female figure carrying a bowl on her head is a "wife," and representations of ivory bracelets confirm her high status. She also has typical body scarification patterns and vertical scars on her face. Her open mouth showing teeth is normal for Urhobo figures of women.
Height: 10 ¾ inches
Estimate: $400 - $600.
