Two Indonesian Masks
Sumatra and Borneo, early 20th century

One Batak (Sumatra), wood with black stain and white pigment circling the eyes and mouth. The mouth set on the diagonal, as if indicating palsy, pain or distress. The other a very large Dayak (Borneo) mask, wood with traces of dark red and gold-brown paints. Diamond-shaped eyeholes, rectangular mouth shown open with pointed teeth. Both in good condition, appropriate for age, origin, and mediums. Both with wood and metal stands.
