Three Gope Boards
Papuan Gulf, Papua New Guinea, 20th century

Carved from the sides of retired dugout canoes, each board is worked in low relief on one side with abstract spirit imagery characteristic of the Papuan Gulf. One features a striking fishbone-like design, while all three are painted with natural earth pigments. Their weathered surfaces and varied carving give the group a strong collective presence, balancing graphic abstraction with ritual intent. Each in good condition.

Heights: ranging from 35 to 66 inches
