DescriptionKUBA /BINJI, Democratic Republic of Congo
Fiber Dance Mask
Fiber, wood, raffia
Masks of this type are used most commonly by the Kuba-Binji and Kuba-Kete during initiatory dances. The masks consist of a fiber hood, made of netted raffia, to which a nose and eyes are attached; the costume is complemented with a fully netted body suit. Though the basic mask type of woven head coverings is found from the Katundu and through the Upemba region, this style is quite specific to the Kasai region.
Height: 18 inches
Estimate: $600 - $900.
