DescriptionKRAN, Ivory Coast, Liberia
Wood, pigment, metal
The Kran are a subset of the We people, a group that also includes the Wobe, N'Gere and others. Masks are owned by families and appear in ceremonies whose ultimate function is social control. Kran masks normally have triangular eye holes and cheekbones framing the face. Kagle is a chimpanzee who performs in a wild dance; Kagle dancers mimic the appearance, movements and antisocial behavior of the chimpanzee. By demonstrating such behaviors that lie outside the norms of Kran society, Kran men performing the Kagle masquerade instruct the community on proper conduct.
