The Dan and related tribes of Liberia and Ivory Coast produce a wide variety of masks. The function of these mask in many cases is as agents of social control, although some masks may be used for entertainment purposes. The restrained elegance and simplicity of Dan masks has long been appreciated the West, making these among the most desired of African masks. This mask is of a type identified as Gegon, or the bird masquerade. Nice old example.
