DescriptionBAKONGO, Democratic Republic of the Congo
African peoples from West to South Africa have traditionally carved wood walking sticks in a vast array of forms. Many of the designs feature animals. Used locally, they are emblems of status for respected elders.
The present walking stick, identified as Bakongo work, features a top or handle in the form of a well-carved, slender monkey sitting contemplatively, hand on chin, on a branch. The piece shows some wear but is in good condition.
