An Important Wurkun Shoulder Mask ...
Description
An Important Wurkun Shoulder MaskNigeria, c. 19th to early 20th century
This monumental Wurkun shoulder mask rises from a narrow, yoke-like body to a long cylindrical neck and narrow semicircular head surmounted by a tall crest. A column of linked aluminum ovals runs down the back, recalling a spine; traces of resin on the front indicate that a matching element, now lost, was once attached there as well. Smaller rectangular pieces of cut brass sheet attached on the neck. The facial features are reduced but very animated: an open mouth with inset wood teeth, circular eyes, and concentric scarifications around the ears. Two holes at the back of the crest form "eyes," while the notched edge outlines a nose and mouth, producing a secondary abstract face in profile. The surface bears a rich, time-darkened patina from extensive ritual use. Remains of white pigment on the face. With a large metal stand.
Exhibited internationally and published in Central Nigeria Unmasked, this mask is a superbly executed example of a traditional Wurkun form. Its layered imagery, deep patina, and distinguished pedigree make it one of the most significant works of its type to appear on the market.
